Finished. Done. Complete. Submitted!

I've finally submitted my painting. And boy does it feel good. Thank you everyone who helped and offered support and encouragement, and their language/tech/art skills and knowledge that made this possible. I won't find out for quite a while if I got in, but I feel like no matter the result, I have grown from this experience.

Artist Statement:

A human being is made of two elements: spirit or soul (or our inner-self), and the body, our physicality. In creating this image and meditating on these elements, I was trying to understand how the two meld into one complex individual, creating an identity. Accepting the fact that my body is going to wither and eventually collapse, that it has an end, is difficult. However, combined with this thought is the idea that our minds, emotions, and feelings appear to have a nature that has more depth and is larger than a physical life.

The human experience is a combination of the internal and external self, and creates an environment of learning and enlarged capacity. With the mind, the inner-self can overcome, discipline, and uplift the body. With our flesh and senses, the soul expands and gains depth of feeling and understanding.  Both tutor and enhance the other. Through a fusion of color, shape, and texture I have tried to juxtapose the essential combination of our internal and external selves. Portraiture is a medium that addresses both and creates a whole that is satisfying, and enlightens my understanding of my current human existence and identity.
