Three months and 20 coats later...

....I finally finished this painting. Okay, maybe not 20 coats, but I sure did a lot of layering with this one. I really wanted to get a lot of depth in the skin, especially the cheek.

Detail: face

I knew I wanted to do a self portrait as soon as my BFA show was over, because I wanted to not worry at all about if anyone would like it. I wanted to do a painting that was isolated from outside emotional influence and anxiety.  I also wanted to give myself plenty of time, because in school, projects were always quite rushed.

Detail: whole head.

I've been thinking a lot about how our physical bodies and our feelings, emotions, intellect, and souls interact and relate to each other; how each defines our identities. I wanted to try and think of a way to represent the different parts of our natures (temporal yet eternal, flawed yet with potential for perfection) through symbolic color, shape, and texture.

I'd love to hear any thoughts, reactions, constructive criticism that anyone would be willing to offer.

  3. ANNA you got the depth. yep. totally there. I'm thinking about the SAME things about how to describe the depth of a person through all the variables and angles and influences and its a beautiful thing to think about. Here's a quote that might help you, "You are more than what you have become" Lion King. haha. yes and its beautiful, and not just because you are already beautiful.

Hannah, was that quote from President Monson's Devotional? I love that quote, and I'd love to talk to you about these concepts sometime.

  7. As always, I admire your loving candor as seen in your portraits. You help me see people as rich and complex, loveable as they are right now, not in need of fixing up. You are lovely, and always have been. Great work!
